SAFE Credit Union Assists Mercy McMahon Terrace Memory Care Patients

Residents at Mercy McMahon Terrace in Sacramento are enjoying a new art center that SAFE Credit Union proudly helped furnish as part of the financial institution's Road to a Better Community program.

SAFE Credit Union provided funding for furniture and art supplies for June's Place, an assisted living unit at Mercy McMahon Terrace that serves residents in need of memory care. The sunny art room looks out on an elementary school playground where residents can watch children play while they express themselves through painting, drawing and other art projects.

"SAFE is committed to improving the quality of life for all Sacramento area residents, of all ages," said CEO David Roughton. "People and their families coping with memory loss illnesses such as Alzheimer's and other dementias know that activities like painting and drawing can help those patients better express themselves and find a bright spot in their day. We're happy to be able to help Mercy McMahon Terrace provide this service to its residents."

"Art therapy is really important for people that maybe can no longer communicate in other ways," said Ali True, marketing and activity director at Mercy McMahon Terrace. "It's a great avenue of self-expression."

Mercy McMahon Terrace Memory Care Supervisor Mustafa Ali-Mahgoub summed up the staff's gratitude: "Huge thanks and gratitude to SAFE Credit Union for the gift and partnering with us, enhancing our art space and bringing joy to our residents."

The donation was part of SAFE's commitment to improve the lives of those living in the Greater Sacramento area through financial donations, scholarships and volunteering. SAFE donates $300,000 a year to organizations promoting health and helping children. In a nod to our military roots, SAFE also gives generously to efforts benefiting veterans. In 2017, SAFE employees volunteered more than 11,000 hours to local nonprofits. In 2018, SAFE has upped its game by giving each employee two full paid days to volunteer for purposes meaningful to them.
