Sixteen Sacramento teams competed February 5 in academic competitions related to water issues, ranging from the climate to global affairs. The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) also hosted three teams from Roseville and Rocklin.

Folsom High School, from the Folsom Cordova School District, is this year’s SCOE Academic Decathlon winner. Rocklin High School won the Placer County Office of Education Academic Decathlon. Both teams now advance to the California Academic Decathlon in March.

“Congratulations to winners of the Sacramento County and Placer County Academic Decathlons. All the teams that participated are impressive. Our community is so fortunate to have such talented and dedicated students ready to improve our future,” says SAFE Chief Executive Officer Dave Roughton. “SAFE Credit Union is proud to provide scholarships to the top decathletes to honor their accomplishments and support their future education.”

Roughton and SAFE Board Chair Terry Tremelling attended the Sacramento County Office of Education Academic Decathlon’s awards ceremony after the competition to present scholarships. SAFE Credit Union employees volunteered as judges for student interview and speech competitions.

SAFE awarded $10,000 total to the SCOE Decathlon and its top-scorers. Fifteen $100 scholarships were awarded to Sacramento’s top scoring team members. Eight $400 scholarships were awarded to members of the first place team; nine $200 scholarships were awarded to members of the second place team; and eight $100 scholarships were awarded to members of the third place team. SAFE provided $2,700 to sponsor the event and assist with entrance fees.

“The Sacramento County Academic Decathlon would not be possible without the generous support of SAFE Credit Union,” says David W. Gordon, Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools.

“SAFE has provided scholarships for the past 15 years which proves what a great commitment SAFE continues making to our young people and to our community.”

SAFE supported Placer County Office of Education students who participated in Saturday’s competition with $2,650 in scholarships.

“Placer County is well renowned for our excellent education system,” said Placer County Superintendent of Schools Gayle Garbolino-Mojica. “We are grateful to SAFE Credit Union for their investment in academic success and student achievement through support of the Academic Decathlon Program.”

The competitions were held virtually in 2021. This year, they took place in person at Folsom High School with guidance from the Sacramento County Public Health Department.
